What to look for while buying studio headphones?

Over the years I’ve learnt that buying a studio headphone is like buying a car. With hundreds of models available, it is very essential to do extensive homework before buying a studio headphone.

Here are some vital factors that you need to consider before buying studio headphones – Wired or Wireless: If you are considering a studio headphone for leisure listening then a wireless studio headphone with WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity are ideal for you.

Simply connect your headphones to your device and you can listen to music even while you do the laundry. That said, if you are also considering professional use, consider a wired one for the most accurate sound.

Next thing to consider is comfort. Always check the ear cup and headband padding and ensure that there is no pressure on the ears and head.

Also, check for durability and warranty to ensure you are investing in a first-class quality product.

My personal favorites are Audio-Technica ATH-M50x and Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro 32 ohm Limited Edition.

Audio-Technica ATH-M50x Review:

I’ve been using the Audio-Technica ATH-M50x for a while and am very happy with its performance.

The ATH-M50x comes with two detachable cords, making it one of the most convenient wired headphones on the market.

I simply love the 3.0 m cable that lets me move around while I’m wired to the device. Also, its space-saving design is great for portability. I can simply fold and store them in its handy protecting carrying case. I can also carry them to work in my backpack without worrying about damaging them.

One of my favorite features in the ATH-M50x is its superior design with perfect contours around the ears. It provides fantastic sound isolation, one of the reasons I can enjoy good music even in a noisy subway.

The ATH-M50x’s ear pad and headband padding are suitable for long hours: I’ve never had any problems even after wearing them for several hours at a stretch.

It’s a very versatile studio headphone.

Along with personal listening, it works well for studio tracking and mixing. Thanks to its Proprietary 45 mm large-aperture drivers, they provide exceptional sound clarity and frequency range. The bass response of the ATH-M50x is amazing as well.  And it also offers a 90° swiveling ear cups that are ideal for one-ear monitoring.

If the design and good looks fascinate you, you’ll simply love the wide choice of colors you can choose from. There are conventional black and white options along with gunmetal, red and blue to choose from.

On the flip side, I simply wish they were waterproof and I could wear them while I take my shower.

Beyerdynamic DT 770 Review:

My other favorite is the Beyerdynamic DT 770. I got this pair of stellar studio headphones when Beyerdynamic released them as a Limited Edition version to celebrate their 88th anniversary.

And I’ve been in love with them ever since. Even after years of usage, they look as if I got them just yesterday. That speaks volumes about their quality and durability, especially since I use them quite a lot.

The Beyerdynamic DT 770’s closed headphone design makes it perfect for powerful noise isolation. It has an impressive sound volume and a high-resolution sound effect which is great for monitoring and editing work in the studio. additionally, it has brilliant bass capabilities and is a popular choice among music technicians, and music experts.  Its single-sided cable makes it easy to be taken off frequently without worrying about cables hindering your flexibility.

It works perfectly for leisure-listening as well.

Their sound quality is equally good when I connect them with my smartphone or laptop. This headphone is lightweight and very convenient to wear for long durations; the Softskin headband ensures a pleasurable wearing experience for long hours. The glass ball reinforced ear cups are a delight for music lovers.

One of my favorite features of the Beyerdynamic DT 770 is its all black design with the “limited edition” label that looks so cool.

The Beyerdynamic DT 770 comes with the added advantage of German engineering. Perhaps the icing on the cake is they provide a two-year warranty to users. A lot of parts of this headphone are replaceable and can be changed without professional help.

I just wish that the cable was a little bit longer than 1.6 metres, but I’m definitely not complaining as the mini-jack (3.5 mm) plug works well with all devices and with a ¼” adapter I can easily connect it with my professional system.

Beyerdynamic DT 770 Vs. Audio-Technica ATH-M50x: The Final Word

It’s quite a difficult choice to make. If you are willing to increase your budget you ought to go for the Beyerdynamic DT 770 over the Audio-Technica ATH-M50x. It is more comfortable and versatile in terms of usage.

As far as sound quality is concerned, it is very difficult to find any fault with either of these best studio headphones. The Beyerdynamic DT-770 is marginally better than the ATH-M50x when it comes to the treble sparkle quality.

Go for the Beyerdynamic DT 770 and I’m sure you are going to thank me for this choice!
